Michael P. Païdoussis Medal

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) established the medal in 2022. The Canadian National Committee for the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CNC-IUTAM) established the Païdoussis Medal in Applied Mechanics in recognition of Professor Michael P. Païdoussis, who was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Fluids and Structures (Elsevier). He has made tremendous contributions to the enhancement of research in fluid-structure interaction through challenging experiments and advanced modelling.

The Michael P. Païdoussis Medal recognizes outstanding research, education, and leadership in applied mechanics, including solid continuum mechanics, fluid mechanics, and fluid-structure interaction.

The 2022 (inaugural) recipient was Professor Huajian Gao, the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The 2023 recipient of the Michael P. Païdoussis Medal is Professor J. N. Reddy. The citation reads “Prof. Reddy’s shear-deformation plate and shell theories have resulted in both scientific advancement and technological utility and helped thousands of researchers to extend and apply his ideas to practical engineering problems. He conceived transformative nonlocal formulations to study architected-material structures and damage and fracture in solids. Also, the author of well-received textbooks that have impacted the education of three generations of engineers, he is a worthy recipient of this medal.”
